Suffrage, J Day at the kindergarten & the Sky Tower

Just a few highlights from our weekend in Auckland. This is the courtyard entrance to the art gallery. While I was admiring the suffragists, a woman told me that the town council planned to remove them during a recent renovation. Local women leaders, "all of us strong feminists of course" protested so the suffragists remain. New Zealand was first in the world to give women the vote.

Next, the hemp store. Oh look, it's J day.

That's right. J Day in Myers Park. To protest the international war on drugs and celebrate the J life.

I think these guys might know the way.

Myers Park. Hmm, J day at the kindergarten?

Yep. Mayor Myers created this park and free kindergarten in 1913 as a social improvement project to clean up the problem of "slum shanties and rubbish." It is an active kindergarten today.

The considerably bigger kids are enjoying J day on the kindergarten grounds.

Interesting, but it's on to the Sky Tower for us.
Here's "mission control" for bungy jumpers. Really. They jump from way up there.

Aaaaeeeehhhhh!!

At the top, neon signs flash "jumper 3 min" and count down so you can watch them dangle for a few seconds at the window and then drop. Fun. Our preferred adventure was the sky lounge, a glass of wine and this sunset view.
